I know I posted this last year, but I'll post it again.

I used to work in a telemarketing call center. It was around 1997 to 1998.
ReplyDeleteThere was an AS 400 mainframe computer that the Company used. It automatically dialed numbers for around 30 telemarketers, and handled the incoming calls as well.
Every single inbound and outbound conversation was recorded and saved.
My point is that this sort of automation makes telephone calls, no matter what the distance, dirt cheap.
So they can make as many phone calls, and create as many new numbers as they please, and it will cost them hardly anything.
Imagine the state of the art equipment that a call center belonging to a financial giant like Sallie Mae has.
It also makes it easier for customers to get lost in the shuffle. "You reached the wrong department. Let me transfer you." Then again, they are counting on some frustrated students to give up on making contact.

ReplyDeleteI get calls from the 855 number Doniel just listed. They always hang up when I answer and don't answer when I call back. An odd limbo I'm in because of that. They'll probably document it as "numerous attempts to contact me" while refusing to be on the line even when I answer immediately.
